What happens when urban development comes into direct conflict with the preservation of sacred spaces? Filmmaker Michelle Grace Steinberg explores this contentious topic in her documentary Beyond Recognition. In honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day, Peralta Hacienda Historical Park will present a free screening of this powerful film followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and Corrina Gould, a Chochenyo and Kerkin Ohlone Indian and subject of this project.
After decades struggling to protect her ancestors’ burial places, now engulfed by San Francisco’s sprawl, Corrina Gould and her allies occupy a sacred site to prevent its desecration. When this life-altering event fails to stop the development, they vow to follow a new path – to establish the first women-led urban Indigenous land trust. Beyond Recognition explores the quest to preserve one’s culture and homeland in a society bent on erasing them
