This month we will explore the new mandatory requirements for commercial recycling services in Alameda County with a panel discussion organized by Alameda County Waste Management Authority (Stopwaste.org).

The Alameda County Waste Management Authority (StopWaste.Org) has an ambitious goal to reduce waste by ensuring that, by the year 2020, recyclables and compostables make up less than 10 percent of what goes to landfill.  To help reach that goal, the Mandatory Recycling Ordinance 2012-01 went into effect July 1, 2012 and prohibits the disposal of certain recyclable materials including paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans. 

Affected businesses, those generating four or more cubic yards of garbage per week, need to arrange for adequate recycling service, properly label recycling and garbage containers, and provide recycling information to employees.
