Lower-income and active duty military personnel from Oakland can receive free income tax preparation and filing assistance – and get a head start on obtaining refunds– through the Intuit Tax Freedom Project on Saturday, January 31st. The Computer and Communications Industry Association has teamed with Intuit which is donating its TurboTax® Tax Freedom Edition software to assist eligible taxpayers with electronically preparing and e-filing their federal and California tax returns for FREE.
Participants will learn how to prepare their returns on their own with tax software that is offered through the IRS Free File Alliance. Taxpayers will also get assistance in determining if they qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, a refundable tax credit which could help families get as much as $4,800 back from the IRS. Anyone who can use a computer and a mouse can do this! Trained volunteers will be on hand to assist in both English and Spanish, so taxpayers won't need to worry about going it alone!
