Summary: ''Finding Non-Traditional Sources of Capital"
At the speaker’s podium will be community advocate, financial wizard and innovator, attorney Jenny Kassan, who will speak to “Why it is illegal for small businesses to raise capital from their communities and what can we do about it?” She will outline how small businesses that are ready to enter the market but lack capital can realize their dreams. The presentation will provide an overview of the laws governing capital-raising and then will provide some tools and resources for raising capital within the law. There will be a discussion of successful capital-raising strategies concluding with current legislative efforts to make community capital accessible to small businesses.
Kassan is managing director of Katovich & Kassan Law Group, specializing in socially responsible ventures. In addition, Kassan co-founded, with John Katovich and Michael Shuman, Cutting Edge Capital, a consulting business that focuses on capital raising, community development, and sustainability. Kassan earned a Master's degree in City and Regional Planning from the University of California at Berkeley and her J.D. from Yale Law School. Upon graduation she worked for 11 years at the Unity Council, a nonprofit community development corporation in Oakland where she served as staff attorney and program manager.
