The Lake Merritt Music Series: The Border Cantos Project
In February 2016, the San Jose Museum of Art will open Border Cantos, a haunting cross-disciplinary exploration of the US-Mexico border developed by photographer Richard Misrach and composer Guillermo Galindo. This collaboration (the first of its kind for both artists) premieres monumental, engulfing photographs shot in the borderlands by Misrach, alongside ingenious musical sculptures that Galindo handcrafts from found border objects—a shoe, a water bottle, a comb. The multi-faceted exhibition brings together photography, sculpture, music scores and sound to create a visceral, nuanced portrait of place—and the people who traverse and patrol it.
Guillermo Galindo who is a composer, performer, and sound designer will be speaking about this groundbreaking project. Mr. Galindo is a Senior Adjunct Professor at the California College of Arts and Mills College. The exhibit will be traveling through different museums in the U.S. and abroad and on February 2016 Aperture Foundation will be publishing a book contents of this groundbreaking exhibit.
