6th Annual WALK TO END POVERTY

Join us for the 6th Annual Walk To End Poverty, hosted by the City of Oakland Community Action Partnership in collaboration with United Way of the Bay Area on Saturday, May 21, 2011, from 9 am-1 pm around Oakland's Lake Merritt to ensure that the issue of poverty stays on the national agenda. This community walk is intended to raise awareness about the conditions of more than 76,000 Oakland residents who live in poverty and acknowledge our local heroes who work tirelessly to eradicate poverty within the City of Oakland. Local agencies providing services to Oakland's low-income residents, community organizations, and the community at-large are encouraged to participate in the event by organizing teams of supporters to walk. Join us and become an advocate and take ''The Power of 10'' challenge. Let your voice be heard and your presence felt by organizing a team of 10 advocates to walk with you to take a stand against poverty. The first 500 attendees who bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Alameda County Community Food Bank will receive a FREE t-shirt! Immediately following the walk, a community fair will be held to educate and inform the community about available programs, services, and opportunities to help during these challenging times. Come celebrate and acknowledge local community heroes who are making a difference daily in Oakland and enjoy live entertainment provided by local artists who are committed to social change. D'Wayne Wiggins and the Pop Lyfe band will be performing along with senior line dancers, Prescott Clowns, African drummers and more! Local elected officials will also be on hand to talk about how we can collectively work together to address poverty within the City of Oakland – because together we can make a difference!
