Cats, Kids and Caldecott:  A Brief History of the Picture Book

Picture books aren’t always as simple as they appear. With equal importance of storytelling and visuals, the picture book should be taken seriously as a tool and an art form. Come see a brief history of this medium and also learn about the prestigious Caldecott Medal. How does a group of librarians decide the most distinguished American picture book each year?

Sharon McKellar has been a librarian with the Oakland Public Library since 2003, serving as a children’s librarian, a branch manager, and currently as the Community Relations Librarian. She is a reader, a writer, and was honored to be a member of the 2015 Caldecott Selection Committee.

May 8    Small Business Lunch & Learn: Business Succession Planning

In May, the Oakland Chamber Small Business Lunch & Learn welcomes:

Brian Ripley
Law Office of Brian A. Ripley

Attendees will learn:

* The fundamentals of succession planning

* Setting goals and determining steps for your exit strategy

* How to maximize the value of your business to potential successors

Why a succession plan is critical if you own a business.

Most business owners don't think about their exit strategy until they approach retirement.  By then, many of the most attractive options are out of reach, either financially or otherwise.  Ideally, the best time to start thinking about your succession plan is when you start your business. This workshop will explore the fundamentals of succession planning, and the steps needed to achieve this important goal.

Since 1983, Oakland attorney Brian Ripley has been advising Bay Area entrepreneurs on the best ways to optimize and capture the value of their businesses and provide for their family's long-time term security.
Every month, the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce aims to host a Small Business Resource Lunch event for our members and their employees.  Topics are based on our members’ needs and desires for further awareness and education.

Topics will range from Social Media to Retirement Plans for Small Business to Referral Marketing and Sales.

Upcoming events will be listed on the chamber calendar.  Please contact Cory Nott (Cory@ReferralInstituteOakland.com)  if you have any questions about these events.  The cost for each Lunch & Learn event is $10 per member, and $15 per non-member. Lunch is provided. Let us know if you have any dietary restrictions in advance and we will do our best to accomodate

May 12    A's vs Red Sox

The Oakland A’s will arrive in Mesa, Arizona this month to begin preparation for the 2015 season, and the Chamber is already making plans to help cheer them on to more victories once the season begins.

The Chamber has reserved tickets for one A’s game this year that should be of particular interest in the Bay Area. On Tuesday evening, May 12, join Chamber members and staff at O.co Coliseum for a battle of two exceptional teams – the A’s versus the Boston Red Sox, which now have two outstanding players who formerly played in the Bay Area – former Oakland A’s outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

And then, just to make the game even more enticing, the Chamber has acquired reserved seats on the Plaza Level (second deck) overlooking third base. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Tickets for the A’s-Red Sox showdown are just $40 per person ($50 for non-members) and the ticket price is guaranteed – even as regular ticket prices normally increase for this exciting game.

Art History Lecture Series: High Style - The Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection

A docent from the Legion of Honor in San Francisco will present a lecture on this new exhibit.  "Gowns, accessories, and other looks by the most influential designers of the last one hundred years—including Chanel, Givenchy, Dior, and Charles James—trace the evolution of fashion in the 20th century. See this exclusive West Coast presentation from the Brooklyn Museum’s distinguished costume collection.

These fashions worn by American women reflect the nation’s tastes and transformations during the decades between 1910 and 1980. Significant looks from French couture houses include designs by Jeanne Lanvin, Madeleine Vionnet, and the iconoclastic surrealist designer Elsa Schiaparelli. Additional attention is given to the pioneering generation of American women designers working in the 1930s through the 1950s, such as Bonnie Cashin, Elizabeth Hawes, and Claire McCardell, and their male counterparts, including Norman Norell, Mainbocher, and Gilbert Adrian."
