Mar 20    2015 Economic Development Summit : The Oakland Advantage
SEE BOTTOM RIGHT FOR PRICES!
Oakland has experienced a significant uptick in entrepreneurial activity over the past few years.  From technology and web-based companies to bricks and mortar-type specialized manufacturing, makers and food production start-ups to social enterprises, non-profits and creative, arts-based and design firms to  innovative restaurants and nightlife and entertainment venues, a number of entrepreneurs are increasingly choosing to launch and grow their businesses and organizations in Oakland.  This emerging “New Economy” builds off of the strong base that the stewards of the local economy, the City’s long-standing existing businesses and industries, have forged over decades of operating in the City and guiding the City’s economic development.

The Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce annual Economic Summit on March 20, 2015 will focus on “the Oakland Advantage” as a place to start and grow businesses in Oakland’s New Economy.

Following a welcome introduction, Garrick Brown, VP of Research, West Region, DTZ (formerly Cassidy Turley) will provide a real estate update, a market overview and trends briefing for the East Bay.
marketplace.

The first panel will discuss “Building for Oakland’s Economy” focusing on ongoing and upcoming infrastructure developments and investments that create the environment to support existing and emerging New Economy businesses.

Christopher Thornberg, Founding Partner, Beacon Economics will close out the event with a special presentation on the “Oakland Indicator Project” an annual data tool that can allow for a more focused dialog about economic conditions and trends in Oakland and help stakeholders understand how various policy options would impact different parts of the City.

Mar 27    Small Business Lunch & Learn: HR Strategies for Business Growth

This month, the Small Business Lunch & Learn welcomes:

Sara Skowronski, SPHR
of EOS Human Resources Consulting

“HR Strategies for Small Business Growth.”

Small business owners hire employees to help them grow their business, but if the owner does not consciously define a strategy for managing employees and human resources function, and for staying compliant with state and federal laws, a strategy will be created by default that may not be aligned with the company vision and may actually hurt the growth of the company.  In this presentation we will discuss steps to create an HR process and strategy that will align with business growth.

Sara Skowronski is a Senior Human Resources professional with over 15 years progressive experience in assisting in the rapid growth of several Bay Area businesses. She consults start-up/SMB employers who are not yet ready for fulltime HR Executive staff but are in need of access to the knowledge required to be an employer.

She helps her clients navigate the labyrinth of employment laws and regulations required to be an effective employer while working within their company’s structure and changing requirements. Together they bridge the corporate initiatives with the employees’ needs, seamlessly blending the qualities of the company and its’ staff.

Every month, the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce aims to host a Small Business Resource Lunch event for our members and their employees.  Topics are based on our members’ needs and desires for further awareness and education.
Topics will range from Social Media to Retirement Plans for Small Business to Referral Marketing and Sales.

Upcoming events will be listed on the chamber calendar.  Please contact Cory Nott (Cory@ReferralInstituteOakland.com)  if you have any questions about these events.  The cost for each Lunch & Learn event is $10 per member, and $15 per non-member. Lunch is provided. Let us know if you have any dietary restrictions in advance and we will do our best to accomodate.
