KALEIDOSCOPE | Youth Fellows 2014 | April 10 - April 11 Kaleidoscope brings together new work by over 70 students, showcasing the creative talent of the next generation of Oakland artists. The exhibition includes work in a variety of mediums by young artists from Fremont High, Oakland High, Oakland Unity High, Skyline High, and Lighthouse Community Charter School. The exhibition also includes highlights from Pro Arts' Youth Arts programming in elementary and middle schools. About Youth Fellows: Youth Fellows integrates arts education, exhibition opportunities, professional arts training, and youth development in five Oakland High Schools. Since 2007, the program has connected over 300 youth with professional artists. In 2014, Youth Fellows Arts Training Intensives serve 70 youth at five Oakland high schools: Fremont High, Oakland High, Oakland Unity High, Skyline High, and Lighthouse Community Charter School.

Art History Lecture Series: Yoga: The Art of Transformation Yoga: The Art of Transformation explores yoga?s goals; its Hindu as well as Buddhist, Jain, and Sufi manifestations; its means of transforming body and consciousness; and its profound philosophical foundation. The exhibit includes more than 120 works dating from the third to the early twentieth century; temple sculptures, devotional icons, illustrated manuscripts, and court paintings?as well as colonial and early modern photographs, books, and films?illuminate yoga?s central tenets and its obscured histories.

Apr 13    Oakland Symphony Chorus presents Handel's Easter Messiah
Oakland Symphony Chorus, Music Director Lynne Morrow and participating audience members will perform Handel?s iconic oratorio, Messiah, Sunday, April 13, at 5:30 pm at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland. Guest artists include Rudy de Vos, organ; Shawnette Sulker, soprano; Amy Bouchard, mezzo-soprano; Darron Flagg, tenor and Zachary Gordin, baritone. The audience members will be invited to sing along with the "Hallelujah" Chorus. This is an ideal concert to usher in the Easter season.

Apr 26    Canonization Vigil Mass
The week after Easter, Pope Francis will preside in Rome over the canonization of two former Popes: John XXIII and John Paul II. The Diocese of Oakland will mark the occasion with a vigil Mass of Thanksgiving on the eve of the canonizations. All are welcome. The Mass will include a solemn choral rendition by the Cathedral Choir of the Te Deum, a hymn of praise and thanksgiving to God that is traditionally sung on momentous occasions. Music for this special Mass will also include a setting of Regina Coeli Laetare (Queen of Heaven, Rejoice) by Palestrina, and Los Angeles-based composer Ola Gjeilo?s setting of Ubi Caritas. Please join with Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, and Catholics from throughout the diocese for this very special evening. The Polish community of the diocese will provide a reception following the Mass. Blessed John Paul served as pope from 1978 to 2005 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on May 1, 2011.
