Nov 12    Economic Development Forum
This month's Economic Development Forum will present a special treat - a report from BART's Tom Dunscombe on the Oakland Airport Connector, which is scheduled to begin operations later this month.

In the four years that the Connector project has been under construction, 1,316 on-site jobs were created. Of those positions, 807 were filled by Bay Area talent with 240 of those workers living in Oakland or nearby communities.

The 3.2-mile link between BART's Coliseum Station and Oakland International Airport will replace AirBART, a shuttle bus operated by the Port of Oakland. The Connector will be a far more relaxing ride that will offer swift, reliable service because the system will be all electric and will run on a fixed, elevated guideway above the Hegenberger congestion.

In this workshop, grief gets center stage. Grief Transformation Coach and Filmmaker Dr. Michelle Peticolas will share her film, The Heart of Grieving and lead the group in an exploration of the arduous and at times ecstatic journey of grief and loss. There will be space to share your own story and listen to the stories of others. We will look at the fears, the challenges, the insights and the gifts that can accompany loss. Attitudinal Healing Connection, Inc. and our global community would like to invite the public to attend its ?25 Years of Loving Our Community? Gala! This gala will celebrate 25 years of dedicated and positive community engagement that AHC has fostered in Oakland neighborhoods. Nov 18    Power Breakfast Featuring OUSD Superintendent Antwan Wilson

Join the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and the Oakland Unified School District Superintendent Antwan Wilson on Tuesday, November 18th as he discusses his strategic vision for Oakland Public Schools.

Come learn the critical role students, families, teachers, staff, government agencies, non-profits and the business and faith communities will play in creating full-service community schools that improve outcomes for students and strengthen our city.

Do you want to know how our schools have been progressing? What’s in store for the future? Wilson, who left the Denver Public Schools system as assistant schools superintendent, turned around one of the toughest schools in the 90,000-student system. The Nebraska native used his diplomatic skills in his dealings with angry Denver parents who opposed a 2010 district plan to break up Denver’s Montbello High School, where he served as principal for three years, into three smaller schools. In three years at the troubled school, he turned around the culture and attitudes of staff and students. When he left in 2008 he had raised the acceptance rate at two- and four-year colleges from 35 percent to 95 percent. “The course we are charting is an ambitious one,” he says, “but nothing less will produce the results we need for our young people. In Oakland, as elsewhere, the absence of consistency and lack of equitable opportunities exist in disheartening proportion. As a community we must work from the fundamental belief that our students deserve the best.”
