The week after Easter, Pope Francis will preside in Rome over the canonization of two former Popes: John XXIII and John Paul II. The Diocese of Oakland will mark the occasion with a vigil Mass of Thanksgiving on the eve of the canonizations. All are welcome. The Mass will include a solemn choral rendition by the Cathedral Choir of the Te Deum, a hymn of praise and thanksgiving to God that is traditionally sung on momentous occasions. Music for this special Mass will also include a setting of Regina Coeli Laetare (Queen of Heaven, Rejoice) by Palestrina, and Los Angeles-based composer Ola Gjeilo?s setting of Ubi Caritas. Please join with Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, and Catholics from throughout the diocese for this very special evening. The Polish community of the diocese will provide a reception following the Mass. Blessed John Paul served as pope from 1978 to 2005 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on May 1, 2011. Blessed John XXIII, known particularly for convoking the Second Vatican Council, was pope from 1958 to 1963; Blessed John Paul beatified him in 2000.
